American University of Sharjah Admission Requirements 2027

This guide gives the admission requirements that the American University of Sharjah (AUS) publishes itself, and separates them from the figures that circulate on third-party listing sites. Where the two disagree, we say so rather than picking the more attractive number. Two facts that most summaries leave out are covered in full here: the Bridge Program for applicants whose English falls short of direct entry, and the placement tests that every admitted student sits after the offer.

Which page do you need?

  • You want to know whether you qualify for AUS — you are on the right page. Start with the quick answers below.
  • Your English score is below the requirement — go to section 4, then the course-level guide linked there.
  • You already have an offer and were told to sit a test — that is the placement test, section 5, not an admission test.
  • You are comparing universities, not applying to one — read University of Sharjah, Khalifa University or NYUAD.
  • You need the test itself, not the university — see the Digital SAT guide, IELTS guide or TOEFL guide.

UAE licensing Licensed by the competent federal academic accreditation authority

Three corrections to figures that circulate widely — including in our own earlier version of this page.
1. The US accreditor. AUS is accredited in the United States by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Summaries that name a different regional commission are wrong. Our earlier version named the wrong one; it has been corrected.
2. There is no separate communication college. AUS has four colleges and schools. Tables listing five — adding a college of communication — are inventing one. Mass communication sits within the College of Arts and Sciences.
3. Ranking claims need an edition year. "Top 400 globally" and "top 10 in the Arab world" appear constantly without a source or a year. The published, dated placement is 272nd in QS World 2026.

3. Undergraduate admission — what is actually published

The high school requirement

The university's published answer is a minimum of 80 percent or equivalent in the final year of secondary school, or 80 percent or equivalent across the best two of the last three years. That second route matters and is almost never mentioned: a student whose final year dipped may still qualify on the strength of two earlier years.

The same published answer adds that applicants with higher credentials receive priority consideration. Read plainly, 80 percent is the threshold for being considered, not the threshold for being admitted.

A conflict you should know about. A widely read independent guide to AUS states a minimum of 60 percent in the final secondary year. That does not match the university's own published figure of 80 percent. We are publishing the university's figure and flagging the discrepancy rather than averaging them. If your average sits between the two, do not assume the lower number applies to you — ask admissions in writing.

Where the SAT fits

The published position is that the SAT is required for applicants presenting an American-style high school diploma, together with a minimum 3.0 CGPA. For other credential types it is accepted but not stated as universally required.

Minimum SAT totals of 1100 and 1200, and ACT composites of 22 and 26, are repeated across summary sites — including our own earlier version of this page. We could not find any of them in the university's own published requirements, and we have removed them. The same applies to a per-college GPA table assigning 3.3 to engineering and 3.0 to everything else: it reads precisely but we found no published basis for it.

→ If you are preparing the test itself, the Digital SAT guide covers the current four-module adaptive format.

Documents

  • Completed online application
  • Official secondary school transcripts
  • Official SAT or ACT score report, where it applies to your credential
  • Official English proficiency score report
  • Secondary certificate equivalency, where your certificate was issued outside the UAE
  • Valid passport copy
  • Personal statement, and letters of recommendation for some programs
  • Portfolio for architecture and design programs
  • A non-refundable application fee — confirm the current amount on the official admissions pages

4. English proficiency — and the route most guides omit

Route Published figure Applies to
IELTS Academic 6.0 Programs generally
IELTS Academic 6.5 MBA, TESOL, doctoral
TOEFL iBT 80 MBA, TESOL, doctoral
TOEFL ITP 550 MBA, TESOL, doctoral
EmSAT English Accepted — no public threshold found UAE school graduates

A note on the 6.0 versus 6.5 confusion. Many listing sites quote 6.5 as a blanket undergraduate minimum. In the university's own wording, 6.5 is attached to the MBA, TESOL and doctoral programs, while 6.0 is the figure given for programs generally. Program-level requirements can be higher than the institutional floor, so confirm your specific program rather than trusting either figure as universal. We previously published "6.0 overall with no band below 5.5"; we found no published basis for the per-band condition and have removed it.

The Bridge Program — the single most useful fact on this page.
An applicant whose English sits at IELTS 4.5 to 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 32 to 79, is not simply refused. The university operates a Bridge Program that such applicants may enroll in to raise their English proficiency. Almost no Arabic or English summary of AUS admissions mentions this, which means students in that band often abandon the application believing they are ineligible. If your score is in that range, this is the route to ask about by name. A score below the band is a different conversation — ask admissions where you stand rather than assuming.

5. After the offer: the course-level step

This section exists because it is the most common point of confusion in the whole process, and because it is routinely left out.

All admitted bachelor's students sit major tests in English, mathematics and/or physics, depending on the intended major. The purpose is to determine the appropriate course level to start in.

Three consequences worth understanding:

  • It does not affect your admission. By the time you sit it, you are already admitted. It cannot take the offer away.
  • It can affect how long your degree takes. Being placed into a lower starting level means preparatory coursework before the credit-bearing sequence begins, which can add a semester or more.
  • Which subjects you sit depends on your major. An engineering applicant can expect mathematics and physics to matter in a way they will not for a design applicant.

Because it sets your starting level rather than your eligibility, the sensible preparation is a refresh of secondary-level fundamentals in the relevant subjects — not intensive test coaching. A student who crams to place one level higher than their actual command of the material has bought themselves a harder first semester, not an easier degree.

6. The four colleges

College or school Notes
College of Engineering Strong secondary mathematics and physics expected; placement tests in both are likely
College of Architecture, Art and Design Portfolio required for architecture; the architecture program holds US architectural accreditation dating from 2010
College of Arts and Sciences Includes mass communication and computer science programs
School of Business Administration The MBA carries the higher English threshold noted in section 4

If a table elsewhere shows you five colleges, one of them is invented. We published that error ourselves and have corrected it.

7. Deadlines — a pattern, not a table

The published pattern is an early deadline in October and a regular deadline in April for the fall semester, and an October deadline for the spring semester. A complete application is stated to be processed within ten business days.

We have deliberately removed the dated deadline table this page used to carry. It listed an early fall deadline in February, which does not match the published pattern, and by the time you are reading this its fall 2026 rows have expired. Deadline months shift between cycles; check the current cycle on the official admissions pages.

8. When you do not need preparation help

Being honest about this is more useful than selling you something you do not need. You probably do not need structured preparation if:

  • Your English score already clears the requirement for your specific program, with margin.
  • Your secondary average is comfortably above 80 percent and your credential type does not require the SAT.
  • You are sitting the placement test, not an admission test. Review your own school material instead.
  • Your gap is a document — an equivalency certificate, a transcript, a portfolio — not a score. No course fixes paperwork.
  • You have one band or a few points to gain and months to do it in. Consistent independent reading and practice may well be enough.
  • You have not yet confirmed your program's actual requirement. Find that out before paying for anything.

9. Where preparation genuinely helps

The two gaps that actually stop AUS applicants are an English score below the program requirement and, for American-style diplomas, an SAT result below what the application needs. Both respond to structured work.

We offer IELTS, TOEFL and Digital SAT preparation, one-to-one and online, starting with a diagnostic so the plan matches the gap rather than assuming one. We do not promise a particular score — nobody honestly can, and any provider who does is telling you something they cannot know.

10. Sources and how to check this yourself

Every figure above came from one of two independent sources: the university's own published answers to applicant questions, and an institutional reference record for enrolment, accreditation and ranking data. Where a third, independent guide disagreed — on the secondary minimum and on the English threshold — we have published the disagreement rather than resolving it silently.

Requirements, deadlines and ranking positions change between cycles. Before you act on any number here, confirm it on the official admissions pages or in writing from the admissions office. This page is a map, not a substitute for the source.
